Bev Kingdon Receives Conservation Award

At a fundraising dinner at Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre in Midland, our swan lady, Beverly Kingdon, was presented with the Harry Lumsden Conservation Award for outstanding contribution to wildlife and the environment.

Harry Lumsden was present to make the presentation to Beverly and echoed the thoughts of the guests when he said Beverly was most deserving and it was a personal pleasure for him to give his award to her.

Beverly has been un untiring contributor to the reintroduction of Trumpeter Swans in Ontario for the past fifteen years and was responsible for establishing the west shore of Lake Ontario as an over- wintering feeding area for the birds.

Beverly has fed, monitored, rescued and transported swans for fifteen years and this past winter had 104 birds to care for.

She has also engaged in public awareness programmes for the swan project and was instrumental in arranging the swan release in Lake Nipissing with the Lake Nipissing Partners in Conservation.

The success of the reintroduction is largely due to Beverly's involvement and commitment.

Today there are 450 free-flying Trumpeter Swans in Ontario and in 1992 there were none.
